GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) - One out of five babies in Kent County is born into poverty. That is why a diaper drive is underway right now to help local families with that basic necessity.
The Great Start Parent Coalition is spearheading the effort in connection with ACCESS food pantries . The goal is to have 25,000 diapers donated by September 12.
The Great Start Diaper Drive hopes to fill a large need because low-income families cannot receive money for diapers through food stamps or WIC. According to the coalition, an adequate supply of disposable diapers can cost more than $100 a month.
If you would like to help, you can drop off unopened boxes of disposable diapers at boxes throughout the community --
Cash donations can also be made. Checks should be made payable to Heart of West Michigan United Way with "Parent Coalition Diaper Drive" in the memo line.
All donations will be distributed through ACCESS food pantries.
