Grandpa gave baby lethal morphine dose

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) - A man who gave his 1-year-old grandson a dose of morphine that killed him has pleaded to a lesser charge in the crime.

Greg Busby, who was 59 at the time of his arrest in March, pleaded guilty to one count of involuntary manslaughter at a Tuesday status conference.

The baby, Antonio Garcia-Lazarski, was staying with Busby and his wife on Feb. 10 while the child's mom was out of town. When Busby's wife went to check on the baby at their Gaines Township home, she noticed Antonio was not breathing. Antonio was declared dead at the scene.

An autopsy was performed and toxicology results reveal Antonio had "a lethal dose of morphine and a non-lethal dose of Benadryl in his system."

Busby told detectives he didn't mean to harm his grandson, court documents show. He said he wanted to calm the baby down and make him feel better.

Busby was already on parole after being convicted of forgery and counterfeiting at the time of the child's death.

Sentencing is scheduled for Sept. 27.
