GRANDVILLE, Mich. (WOOD) - For more than 90 minutes, Walker police officer Trevor Slot was remembered as a devoted father and husband, friend, sports fan, lifelong pal and community servant who gave his life so others would be safe.
Slot, the 41-year-old married father of two, died Oct. 13 in the line of duty. He was run over trying to stop fleeing bank robbers.
Thousands of people filled the Resurrection Life Church in Grandville, including police officers from around the state and around the country.
The day began with a solemn procession from the Third Reformed Church to the Resurrection Life Church in Grandville, chosen for its ability to handle such a large crowd.
Police personnel began filing in to pay their respects, and for nearly two hours they silently walked by Slot's flag-draped casket and paid tribute.
In honor of Officer Slot, all police officers in Michigan who were on the road stopped at 1 p.m. Friday and turned on their sirens for 15 seconds. Additionally, Gov. Snyder ordered all flags to be flown at half-staff on Friday.
The memorial service began around 1 p.m. and lasted for more than 90 minutes.
Following the service, a funeral procession traveled the approximately 17 miles from the church to the Rosedale Cemetery off Lake Michigan Drive. The procession took about an hour.
At the graveside, an honor guard provided a 21-gun salute as family, friends and fellow officers watched in silence.
A 24 hour vigil began at noon Tuesday, followed by visitations on Wednesday and Thursday at the Third Reformed Church. Though open to the public, the visitations were greatly populated by police officers from many agencies around the state.
