WALKER, Mich. (WOOD) - Several officers spent Sunday at a Grand Rapids home in the 500 block of Spring Avenue, searching for evidence that could be related to the killing of a Walker woman.
Police confirmed it was Jamie Powell, 30, who was found shot to death in her apartment at 950 Four Mile Road, on Saturday afternoon. Police said a neighbor reported a suspicious situation at the Old Orchard Apartment complex at the time. Detectives told 24 Hour News 8 the neighbor spotted someone crawling out of Powell's apartment, and the shooting did not appear to be connected to a robbery.
Shannon Powell, one of Jamie's cousins, lived with her until recently and said Sunday night Jamie didn't deserve this. Watch the video to hear from her.
Police arrested a man in connection with the death, but later released and cleared him. Officers also were looking for the victim's car, but eventually found it.
One detective left the Grand Rapids home with some evidence bags around 4 p.m., but investigators wouldn't say much.
Investigators said Monday afternoon they are pursuing numerous leads relating to who is responsible for Powell's death.
"You don't hear any arguments out of this place -- no yelling," said Michael Nordstrom, a neighbor to the victim. "When I got a call last night, I was surprised to hear there was a shooting in my apartment complex. What's going on? Who is it? I never hear it here."
A neighbor to the Grand Rapids home searched by police Sunday said two men in their 20s or 30s live in the residence.
In Walker on Saturday, neighbors called police after hearing something suspicious, and officers responded at about 4:45 p.m., according to investigators. Police found a woman with at least one gunshot wound dead on scene, they said. Neighbors told 24 Hour News 8 they heard a gunshot around 1 p.m.
Police worked late through Saturday night -- walking back and forth from their mobile crime scene unit to the apartment.
Investigators ask anyone who saw anything suspicious to call them at 616.791.6813 or Silent Observer at 616.774.2345.
