BYRON TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) - Dozens of Grand Rapids police officers and FBI agents showed up to the South Kent Landfill for the second day in a row to search for the body of 2-year-old Jozlynn Martinez.
The search crew got significantly more done Tuesday than it did on the first day of the search, GRPD Chief Kevin Belk told 24 Hour News 8.
"We're hoping to find the body of Jozlynn," Belk said. "[But] as we said before, the chances are not real great."
Searchers don't have a firm deadline as to when they will stop looking, Belk said. They will continue until agents and officers get through the section of the landfill they have identified as the only likely place Jozlynn's body may be.
"We have an area we would like to get through that we believe was the material that was brought in from that time frame," Belk said.
Landfill officials at the scene said searchers have had good conditions to comb through the area, since not a lot of trash came in during the time frame police are examining, and the searchers are focusing on one isolated area.
This is the first time Belk said he knows of that GRPD has participated in a landfill search, especially a large scale one such as this.
But there was a similar landfill search in Ottawa County six years ago, after a man's body accidentally was taken to the Autumn Hills landfill from a Holland funeral home.
The search lasted for 48 hours but his body was never recovered.
Belk said for their search, the goal is to be as meticulous as possible to find Jozlynn's body.
"It's a tedious process but I think it's been very thorough," Belk said.
