GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) - Federal, state and local investigators converged on two Grand Rapids area addresses tied to Kris Cheyne and Derryl LaFave Thursday, looking for evidence tying them to a series of brazen bank robberies, including the one that ended in their deaths and the death of Walker police officer Trevor Slot.
24 Hour News 8 confirmed the two had been developed as potential suspects prior to the ChoiceOne bank heist in Ravenna, but there simply wasn't enough evidence to tie them to the robberies.
Investigators aren't saying what, if any, physical evidence they found tying the two men to two robberies at a bank in Moline . But the circumstantial evidence is striking.
It begins with the way they enter the bank. In both the Moline robberies and the Ravenna hold-up, the suspects were methodical. Their precision and efficiency caused one investigator to wonder if the suspects were once in the military.
24 Hour News 8 found that LaFave and Cheyne ran Urban Chaos Airsoft and Tactical Training Center on Edna in Grand Rapids. It's a sort of playground for big kids who like playing war.
Another factor leading police to tie the crimes together is the suspects wore dark masks in both the Ravenna and Moline cases. In all three bank robberies, the suspects used a long gun and an assault-style rifle.
There are additional similarities. The banks were robbed about the same time - 10:30 a.m. And the targets are located in more rural areas on the outskirts of town, a common target for bank robbers.
