KENTWOOD, Mich. (WOOD) - One of two panhandlers whose federal lawsuit overturned Michigan's ban on begging was in a Kentwood courthouse Wednesday facing charges of panhandling.
James Speet was arrested in Kentwood the day after a federal judge ruled the state law against panhandling was unconstitutional.
He is being charged under a Kentwood city law that city leaders say they will continue to enforce.
On Wednesday, Speet met with a prosecutor and refused to take a plea deal.
"I was thinking I was not doing anything wrong," Speet told 24 hour News 8.
