NELSON TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) - A 5-year-old boy was hospitalized with a skull fracture and bruised lung after a Monday afternoon car crash.

It happened around 1 p.m. on Pine Lake Avenue north of 21 Mile Road in Kent County's Nelson Township.

The boy's mother, Amanda Phillips, was driving north on Pine Lake Avenue when she lost control of her GMC Tahoe on a slushy road. The SUV then went off the road and hit a tree, according to a news release.

The boy is expected to survive.

Phillips and her son were wearing seat belts.
