WALKER, Mich. (WOOD) - Three citizens were recognized for helping a man who caught fire after being involved in a hit-and-run crash.

Luis Valdez-Amaro was headed south on Alpine Avenue on April 21 when he was rear-ended by a hit-and-run driver.

The crash caused Valdez-Amero's car to collide with a pole and burst into flames.

Three citizens stopped to pull Valdez-Amaro -- who was on fire and unconscious -- from his burning vehicle.

Gerald Bajema of Grand Rapids, David Hart of Grand Rapids and Aurcellius Randle of Walker were the three who risked their personal safety to save Valdez-Almaro's life.

Those three citizens were honored at the Monday evening Walker City Commission meeting. They were recognized by the Walker Police Department as heroes for assisting Valdez-Amaro.

Hart was not present at the meeting.
