WASHINGTON (WOOD) - Two West Michigan fallen officers were honored Sunday night at an annual event in Washington, D.C.

Officer Eric Zapata of the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety and Officer Trevor Slot of the Walker Police Department were remembered at the 24th Annual Candlelight Vigil at the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial.

Zapata was killed while responding to a call of shots fired in April 2011.

Slot was killed in October 2011 during a police chase that left him and two bank robbers dead.

The names of 362 officers from across the country who have died in the line of duty were read and dedicated on the walls of the memorial.

The names of nine Michigan officers were added -- five of whom died in the line of duty in 2011.

U.S. Attorney General Eric Hold delivered the keynote address at the event.

Family members, command officers and city officials from Walker and Kalamazoo were in Washington for the event.

This coming week is National Police Week.
