GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) - Two Kent County men charged with the 2008 slaying of Abelino Ramos will be tried on murder charges in circuit court.
Jeremy Lopez, 21, of Wyoming, and 18-year-old Mike Torres-Zuniga, of Grand Rapids, were bound over for trial on charges of felony murder and open murder, court records indicate.
The men were charged after 17-year-old Ramos was found shot to death in a driveway of the 600 block of Shamrock in November 2008.
The night of the shooting, a witness told police he heard an argument and what sounded like a physical assault -- then gun shots.
A small white vehicle was seen leaving the area.
In April 2009, a teenager crashed his car into a telephone pole on Clyde Park Avenue near Grandville Avenue in Wyoming.
The 16-year-old driver called police to report the accident, then called back and confessed to killing Ramos. The teen was taken to a juvenile detention center. No formal charges ever were issued against the teen related to the homicide.
About 14 months after the shooting, Lopez and Torres-Zuniga were arrested and charged with the crime. If convicted, both men face life in prison.
