CALEDONIA, Mich. (WOOD) - Two vehicles collided at the intersection of Broadmoor Avenue and 68th Street on Sunday afternoon, trapping one driver in his car.
The airbags deployed in both vehicles, and they sustained extensive damage. The driver of a truck was able to get out of his vehicle without emergency help, but the driver of a car was trapped.
Witnesses told 24 Hour News 8 they saw flames underneath the car that had the man trapped inside. Several people used a nearby gas station's fire extinguisher to put the flames out. But the trapped man was talking, witnesses said.
About 12 Caledonia firefighters extracted the victim using the Jaws of Life, which took about 15 minutes. The crash occurred at around 3:45 p.m.
Caledonia Fire Chief Brian Bennett said the extent of the damage could have been much worse in such a high-impact crash.
"I would say so on a highway where the speeds are up," he said. "Here on Broadmoor, if nobody stopped, that's a pretty high impact."
Both drivers were taken away by ambulance and officials said they were considered medically high priority, but fire officials and Kent County sheriff's deputies said it appeared neither had life-threatening injuries.
