COMSTOCK TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) - Two people died and a toddler remains in critical condition after a 55-year-old woman lost control of her car as she reached for her cell phone.
Around 10 a.m. Sunday, 55-year-old Sandra Jaco was driving her Ford Focus on Sprinkle Road, just south of East Main Street, authorities said. In the car were her 23-year-old daughter Rachel Jaco and her son, 36-year-old Corey Swadling, plus her 3-year-old grandson, Brendyn Jaco.
When she reached for a cell phone, authorities said, the car drifted to the shoulder and Sandra Jaco overcorrected. The car skidded across five lanes of traffic, hit a group of trees and landed on its roof.
Swadling was ejected from the car and Rachel Jaco was partially ejected. Neither was wearing a seatbelt and both were pronounced dead at the scene.
Brendyn Jaco was properly restrained, but suffered critical injuries and was rushed to a Kalamazoo hospital.
"When our deputies got there and rescuers got there, the child was upside down in that seat and he was hurt quite badly. A lot of internal injuries with him and he is still in very critical condition," said Kalamazoo County Undersheriff Pali Matyas.
Sandra Jaco suffered serious injuries.
The crash remains under investigation, though authorities do not believe alcohol played a role.
The finding of the investigation will be forwarded to the county prosecutor's office for possible criminal charges.
