RICHLAND, Mich. (WOOD) - A toy gun caused concern at a Kalamazoo County school, forcing officials to lock the building down Friday morning.

A Gull Lake eighth-grader brought the weapon to school and showed it in class. The school was put in lockdown mode, per school policy.

A sheriff's deputy was sent to the school to investigate.

It was later learned that the student brought the gun, a replica of an antique Derringer, as part of a class project.

The scene was cleared a short time later.

School officials and parents will deal with the issue.
