3,000 gallons of sewage spills on road

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WOOD) - An estimated 3,000 to 4,000 gallons of raw sewage spilled from a manhole onto a Kalamazoo street during the afternoon of Jan. 3.

Residents in the area were advised to avoid contact with the surface water in and around Arcadia Creek. Water samples were taken and the results indicate no further health concern, according to an updated news release on Jan. 7. So the City removed the health advisory.

The overflow occurred onto Maple Street near Crosstown Parkway due to a blocked sewer line, city officials said. The untreated sewage was then released to Axtell Creek from Maple Street to Howard Street through the stormwater system, according to an original news release. The Department of Public Services removed the blockage a few hours later.

Water Reclamation Plant personnel notified the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality and the Kalamazoo County Environmental Health and Community Services of the spill.

This isn't the first time this area was affected by a sewage spill. About 600,000 gallons of raw sewage leaked from a vandalized sewer line in the same area in April 2011.
