KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WOOD) - Three people escaped a fire that injured a public safety officer at a Kalamazoo residence.

The residents noticed the fire sparking in the kitchen ceiling due to a faulty light fixture at their home in the 1000 block of Conant Street in Kalamazoo.

They called 911 around 9 p.m. Monday and exited the home safely.

Members of the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety arrived and saw the fire had spread through the walls to the roof and an upstairs bedroom, police said.

It took about 25 minutes for public safety officers to extinguish the flames.

One of the officers suffered a minor hand injury, and transported to Bronson Methodist Hospital.

The Kalamazoo fire marshal is investigating the blaze.
