KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WOOD) - Kalamazoo County authorities say that though a man was drunk when his SUV struck a pedestrian, he did not cause the crash.
The Sept. 8 wreck near Western Michigan University's Waldo Stadium caused 24-year-old Adam Raut to be hospitalized in critical condition.
On Thursday, a misdemeanor charge of operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated was authorized against 28-year-old Joseph Hile, according to Kalamazoo County Prosecutor Jeff Fink.
But Fink said though the investigation into the wreck indicated Hile had been drinking, speed wasn't a factor and Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety officers found Raut had run into the road before being hit.
The prosecutor's office looked at the accident report, police report and witness statements to reach its conclusion, Fink said.
