PORTAGE, Mich. (WOOD) - A fire at a three-story apartment building in Portage was intentionally set and the ex-husband of one of the residents was arrested.
Just after midnight, Portage firefighters went to the apartments on Ivywood Street in the Timberwood Crossing complex. Smoke was visible and neighboring residents were evacuated while fire crews put out the fire in the main bedroom of one apartment.
No one was in the apartment at the time the fire began, but officers found the door to that apartment had been kicked in and the apartment was ransacked before the fire was started.
The 33-year-old woman who lived at the apartment came home and told police she'd recently gotten threats from her ex-husband. While the police were still at the scene, her ex-husband called her and threatened to kill himself.
A crisis team and other officers went to his home in Kalamazoo Township and convinced him to come out and surrender. The 36-year-old man was arrested and faces charges of home invasion and arson.
The investigation continues.
