TEXAS TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) - The Kalamazoo County Sheriff's Department says investigators have a better idea of how a fire ignited in which five people died.
Sixteen people were in the home at 6835 N Ave. in Texas Township when the blaze started April 25.
Kianna Bracken, 2, Deontae Vaughn, 4, Zion Bryant, 4, and Daniel Adams, 6, died from smoke inhalation. Daniela Adams, 22, died May 4. Vernon Bryant, 5, was injured.
Fire investigators say the fire began on a mattress that was on the floor of the living room.
An exact cause could not be determined, police say, but it was "probably started by one of the children in the home playing with some type of ignition source such as a lighter or matches."
Authorities say there were no smoke detectors in the home, which allowed the fire to go unnoticed until it was too late, as the family slept.
