KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WOOD) - Police arrested a driver on drunken driving charges after his vehicle struck a pedestrian on Saturday outside Western Michigan University's Waldo Stadium.
Police on scene told 24 Hour News 8 Adam Raut, 24, is in critical condition at a Kalamazoo hospital.
The crash happened at about 7:45 p.m. -- shortly after WMU's home opener against Eastern Illinois University started.
Police arrested the 28-year-old driver for operating while intoxicated. There were three people in the Jeep Cherokee with him at the time of the crash; none of them were hurt.
Lt. Mike Treu of the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety said the pedestrian crossed into a SUV's path on eastbound Stadium Drive, and the driver did not have a chance to avoid the crash.
Raut was lying in the road, unconscious and suffering from "significant injuries to his head," according to a news release, when officers arrived.
