Parking violator caught with stolen gun

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WOOD) - A suspicious vehicle containing a stolen gun and drugs led to the eventual arrest of a man who ran from a traffic stop.

Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety Officer Ryan Shank noticed two people in a parked vehicle in a no parking area in the 400 block of Drexel Street at 10:50 p.m. Wednesday.

Officer Shank talked to the driver and then seized a small baggie containing marijuana, according to a news release. The officer then searched the vehicle and discovered a stolen .25 caliber handgun.

One of the vehicle's occupants then ran from the scene.

Officer Jeff Deblecourt and his K-9 partner, Jax, tracked the suspect several blocks, and finally located him hiding under a vehicle in the 300 block of Norway Street.

The 21-year-old Kalamazoo resident was arrested on charges of carrying a concealed weapon, resisting and obstructing an officer, receiving and concealing stolen property, felony firearm, and possession of marijuana.

The other suspect in the vehicle -- a 45-year-old Kalamazoo resident -- was released from the scene at the completion of the investigation.
