TEXAS TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) - Kalamazoo Valley Community College is implementing some new campus safety measures.
The KVCC Board of Trustees has appointed Richard Ives as its public safety director.
The leadership change came after Kenneth Colby resigned in September. Colby helped create the three-year-old department.
Ives previously worked for the Kalamazoo public safety department for 25 years.
The college also is buying 150 emergency telephones for classrooms in the Texas Township and Arcadia Commons campuses and rooms in Lake Auditorium for $78,200.
The new system is being installed to reduce the response time of public safety officers.
The Kalamazoo Gazette says last year, a KVCC professor was choked by a student, but college officials haven't said whether the event prompted any safety changes.
