KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WOOD) - A man and his wife were found dead inside their home on Kalamazoo's south side in what police are calling a murder-suicide, 24 Hour News 8 has learned.
Nawfal Rachdi, 25, and his wife, 29-year-old Andrea Rachdi, were found dead inside the residence in the 2200 block of Lakeway Avenue shortly after 2 a.m. Sunday.
Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety investigators were called to the home after getting a call from a "third party" about a fight. When officers arrived they could not hear anything inside and could see someone lying on the floor.
They forced entry and discovered the Rachdis.
Police remained at the home into Sunday afternoon collecting evidence -- all of which pointed toward a murder-suicide. A source told 24 Hour News 8 the investigation shows that Nawfal killed his wife and then himself.
Investigators have not specified how the couple died, but Andrea's mother told 24 Hour News 8 Sunday she was told her daughter was shot.
However, on Monday, authorities said an 8-inch kitchen knife was found next to the couple. Autopsy results revealed Nawfal Rachdi used an "edged weapon" to kill Andrea, then himself.
Neighbors said the young couple have young children. Those children were not in the home at the time of the incident.
Two vehicles remained in the driveway Sunday and Christmas lights decorated the window. Neighbors told 24 Hour News 8 they didn't hear anything unusual at the home.
A neighbor said she was alerted to what happened Sunday morning. She did not know the couple well.
Another neighbor was shocked to learn what happened and described the people who lived in the home as friendly.
Neighbors also said Andrea was a nurse and Nawfal was continuing his education.
