Man slain attending homicide vigil

BATTLE CREEK, Mich. (WOOD) - A man was slain while attending a vigil for a teenager gunned down exactly three years ago.

Ravon McKinley was shot to death around 12:30 a.m. Thursday. He was 21.

Authorities said between 10 and 15 shots were fired, possibly from more than one gun.

The vigil was being held for Dominique McKinney at the same place he was shot to death in on July 17,2009 - the 200 block of Oneita Street in Battle Creek.

McKinney, who would have soon turned 20, died at the hospital two days after he was shot. That murder remains unsolved.

Police said they don't think the shootings are related.

Witnesses to McKinley shooting have been interviewed by police, but no one has yet been arrested.

Authorities intend to increase patrols in the area of the shooting because violence has become more common.

"We're increasing our staff," said BCPD Sgt. Austin Simon. "We got our gang unit working. We got the fugitive team also helping and assisting. We're going to kind of saturate the streets and take back over the streets and people in this commmunity feel that they are safe."
