KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WOOD) - One man is dead and another injured after a Sunday evening shooting on the north side of Kalamazoo.

The incident happened on North Rose Street near the Frank Street intersection at about 6:10 p.m.

Romney Ramone Hunter, a 21-year-old Kalamazoo man, was shot once in the chest. He was unconscious when police arrived on the scene, according to police. He was transported to Bronson Hospital in Kalamazoo and pronounced dead shortly thereafter.

Police said that the second victim, 31-year-old Troy Edward Whitfield from Kalamazoo, approached police while they were giving aid to the first victim. His wound, a gunshot to the leg, is not considered life-threatening. He was taken to Bronson Hospital for treatment and is expected to make a full recovery.

Kendrick Cooper witnessed one of the victims fall.

"He was running in the street and just dropped," described Cooper. "His other boys he was with ran up on him and tried to talk to him and everything, but I guess they pretty much seen like, man, yeah, he musta got hit."

Cooper said he did not hear gunshots. He only saw one victim collapse.

"It's a deadly thing," said Cooper. "We pretty much gotta deal with it, man. It's hard out here."

Police set up a perimeter around the scene and are searching for suspects, police said.

Police are looking for a person of interest described as a tall black male wearing white hooded jacket. He was seen leaving the area in a black, full-size pickup truck. It is not yet known if he was involved in the shooting.

Anyone with information about the shooting or person of interest is asked to call the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety at 269.337.8994 or Silent Observer at 269.343.2100.
