KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WOOD) - A family of six -- two adults and four children -- escaped their home safely when a fire sparked inside.

A smoke detector alerted the residents to the fire.

Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety officers responded around 8:15 p.m. Sunday and saw the fire on the second floor of the residence.

It took two hours for the fire to be extinguished at the home in the 1100 block of W. North Street.

The majority of the damage was contained to the second floor and attic.

Then around 11:30 p.m., officers saw fire "in a hidden void on the second floor causing the attic to reignite," according to a news release.

More officers were called back to the scene to douse this second fire.

"Officers remained on scene for several hours conducting an overhaul of the structure, which was labor intensive due to the age and construction of the house."

The American Red Cross responded to help the displaced family.

The Kalamazoo fire marshal is investigating the cause of the fire.
