KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WOOD) - A 5-year-old boy was taken to the hospital in critical condition after being struck by a dump truck Monday evening.

It happened around 5:30 p.m. in the 1500 block of Alamo Avenue in Kalamazoo, according to the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety.

Officers called to the scene found the child still lying in the road with "significant" head injuries.

Witnesses told authorities that the child ran into the road as he chased a ball. He was then struck by the side of the eastbound dump truck.

The boy, identified Tuesday as Taishawn Barnes, was taken to Bronson Methodist Hospital. As of Tuesday, he was listed in serious condition.

Alamo Avenue near Douglas Avenue was closed until 8 p.m. as authorities investigated.
