Gibbons completes Lake MI rowing trek

CHICAGO (WOOD/AP) - A Chicago woman who completed her 1,500-mile trip around Lake Michigan despite being allegedly sexually assaulted along the way is back at home and plans to share her experiences by writing a book.

Jenn Gibbons' journey began June 15 in Chicago and ended there on Tuesday as she cried with happiness when she saw members of the rowing team she co-founded for breast cancer survivors cheering her on from shore.

Gibbons told police she was sexually assaulted six weeks ago by a man who crept aboard her boat in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. She says she expects writing a book will help her heal from the experience.

Gibbons adds that she was overwhelmed by the support she has received, including a Chicago flag given to her by Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel with the words "You've got this" written on it.

Gibbons is originally from Battle Creek, started her rowing career at Michigan State University and co-founded an organization called Recovery on Water, Inc. (ROW).

She raised $113,000 for the organization during her rowing journey.
