TEXAS TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD/AP) - Crews have torn down a Kalamazoo County house that was the site of a fire last year that killed four children and a 22-year-old woman.
The Kalamazoo Gazette reports the house at 6835 N Ave in Texas Township sat empty and boarded up since the blaze in April 2009.
The demolition Thursday came a little less than two months after the township board of trustees awarded a bid for the work.
Authorities have said they believe the fire probably was ignited accidentally by a child who was playing with a lighter, matches or some other type of ignition source.
Kianna Bracken, 2, Deontae Vaughn, 4, Zion Bryant, 4, and Daniel Adams, 6, died from smoke inhalation. Daniela Adams, 22, died May 4.
Ten others in the house at the time were able to escape.
