COOPER TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) - A 23-year-old man was critically injured when he lost control of his car and was broadsided by an oncoming pickup truck early Tuesday morning in Cooper Township.

Shortly before 6 a.m., David Meinema was driving west in the 4000 block of West D Avenue in Cooper Township when he lost control of his 1998 Toyota on the icy road, police said.

His car then slid across the center line and was hit by an eastbound 1988 Chevrolet pickup driven by a 60-year-old Kalamazoo man, according to a news release from the Kalamazoo County Sheriff's Department.

Meinema was rushed to Bronson Methodist Hospital and listed in critical condition. The other driver was not injured.

The investigation continues, but police believe speed and the road-weather conditions were factors.
