RICHLAND, Mich. (AP) - Authorities say an eighth-grader has been arrested after hiding a loaded handgun near his school.
The Battle Creek Enquirer reports the Gull Lake Middle School student told authorities he planned to run away from home and use the gun to hunt for food.
Authorities say the boy had taken a family car Monday night and was found Tuesday morning at school in Richland with a small bag of bullets.
Gull Lake Community Schools Superintendent Chris Rundle said the boy led officials to the 1920s-era handgun, which reportedly belonged to a relative. Rundle says the gun wasn't used at the school.
The boy likely will face expulsion. He was being held at a Kalamazoo County youth facility.
