Charge: Parchment AD was 'super drunk'

John Thompson's BAC was 3x the legal limit

RICHLAND, Mich. (WOOD) - Blood test results confirm that the Parchment Middle School assistant principal and high school athletic director was more than three times the legal blood alcohol content level when he was arrested after leading police on a high speed chase.

Prosecutors Friday authorized a warrant charging John David Thompson under the state's new "super drunk" law because of his high BAC.

In total he'll be charged with a felony and three misdemeanor charges: Fleeing and eluding police in the 4th degree, a felony punishible by up to 2 years in prison; operating while intoxicated with a high blood alcohol content (super drunk law); operating while intoxicated, and having an open alcohol container in a motor vehicle.

Prosecutors could not comment on the findings of Thompson's blood alcohol test, but the super drunk charge is reserved for offenders who drive at more than two times the legal limit, or least a .17 BAC.

Sources confirmed that Thompson's BAC level was .25. The legal limit in Michigan is .08.

Thompson was arrested on April 4 after a Richland police officer attempted to pull him over for driving erratically. But when the officer activated his overhead lights, Thompson continued to speed away, a source confirmed to 24 Hour News 8 a day after the arrest.

Thompson finally stopped after a pursuit that lasted for several miles. He was arrested, booked at the Kalamazoo County jail and released pending the results of his blood alcohol test.

Officers will now seek a warrant for his arrest before a Kalamazoo County judge. It is not yet clear how he will be taken into custody on the charges.

An arraignment date has not been set.

A Monday release from Parchment Superintendent Matthew Miller said that Thompson has been placed on paid administrative leave effective immediately "pending the judicial process and its outcome."

Thompson did not return calls for comment earlier this month.
