'A' score for 7 West Michigan hospitals

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WOOD) - Seven West Michigan hospitals have been honored with a Hospital Safety Score of "A" by The Leapfrog Group -- an independent national nonprofit run by employers and other large purchasers of health benefits.

Calculated under the guidance of The Leapfrog Group's nine-member Blue Ribbon Expert Panel, the Hospital Safety Score uses 26 measures of publicly available hospital safety data to produce a single score representing a hospital's overall capacity to keep patients safe from infections, injuries, and medical and medication errors.

US hospitals were assigned an A, B, C, D, or F for their safety.

Leapfrog's information comes from two sources -- its own surveys of hospitals that agree to participate, and data from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid's, Hospital Compare website.

Leapfrog says the way the scores are calculated does not disadvantage hospitals that don't participate in Leapfrog's survey.
