BATTLE CREEK, Mich. (WOOD) - After being closed since the Enbridge oil spill into the Kalamazoo River, the Historic Bridge Park re-opened Friday just outside Battle Creek.

New amenities include a playground, restroom facilities with running water, picnic and larger pavilion, improved parking areas, and an accessible canoe and kayak launch into the Kalamazoo River.

Enhanced landscaping and protection of sensitive environmental areas, such as Dickinson Creek, have also been established.

"It is so important for our local communities to have gathering places that are free to the public, allowing all members of the community to enjoy," said Michigan State Senator Mike Nofs. "Calhoun County Historic Bridge Park is a staple to the residents in this area, and I'm pleased to see the wonderful new enhancements to the park which people of all ages will be able to appreciate."

The long-term maintenance of the new improvements will be paid for through an endowment established by Enbridge.

" Historic Bridge Park has been utilized and appreciated by local residents for many years," said Calhoun County Parks Trustees Board Member Chris Vreeland. "Now with the enhancements made by Enbridge, this park is a revitalized destination for people from all over to visit."

"Enbridge recognizes the importance of Historic Bridge Park and the Kalamazoo River to the people of Calhoun County," added Steve Wuori, President, Liquids Pipelines for Enbridge. "The enhancements provided by Enbridge are an expression of our appreciation for all of the support we have received in the local area. We hope the community will enjoy this park for many years to come."

Calhoun County officials, Enbridge officials and State Sen. Mike Nofs held an invitation-only lunch just before the ribbon-cutting ceremony.

The park is now once again open year-round from 8 a.m - 8 p.m. daily, and entry is free.

Nofs is the guest on this Sunday's episode of To The Point, 10 a.m. Sunday on WOOD TV8.
