At-fault driver in fatal crash released

Prosecutor tells police to investigate further

EMMETT TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) - The 19-year-old who police say caused a fatal crash in Emmett Township has been released from custody without being charged.

The Battle Creek man was originally arrested on suspicion of driving drunk. At the time, police said he could face charges of operating while intoxicated and negligent homicide.

The 19-year-old was driving a pickup truck when he ran a stop sign at the intersection of D Drive North and Nine Mile Road on Tuesday night, police say. The truck crashed into a car driven by James Carlisle of Ceresco. Carlisle, 63, was killed in the crash.

In the pickup with the 19-year-old was another 19-year-old and a 21-year-old. The two 19-year-olds were cited for being minors in possession of alcohol. Detectives interviewed and released the 21-year-old.

Emmett Township Police said they found a bottle of alcohol outside of the pickup.

Police told 24 Hour News 8 the county prosecutor wants them to investigate further before deciding on a charge.

In the meantime, the 19-year-old has been released.

His driving record shows only one speeding ticket.
