EMMETT TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) - Six people in a pickup truck were injured after the vehicle collided with a semi-truck near a truck stop in Emmett Township, police said.
Alcohol and/or drugs may have been factors in the incident, according to the Emmett Township Department of Public Safety.
Calhoun County dispatchers told 24 Hour News 8 the semi-truck was exiting the TA Truck Stop, 15874 11 Mile Road, at Exit 104 off I-94, east of Battle Creek.
The southbound rig then collided with a northbound pickup truck around 6:35 p.m. Monday, police said in an news release. The pickup truck was lodged under the semi-truck trailer.
Three adults and three children were in the pickup truck. Rescue personnel extricated the 32-year-old male driver from Vermontville and one of the passengers.
The front-seat passenger was the driver's 28-year-old girlfriend from Battle Creek. Her sister and three children were in the back seat of the pickup truck.
All six pickup truck occupants were transported to a Kalamazoo hospital for further medical treatment. The driver was airlifted by AirCare, and the other passengers were transported by LifeCare and Marshall Area Firefighters Ambulance Service.
Both front-seat occupants were listed in serious condition. The back-seat passengers suffered minor injuries.
The driver and passenger of the semi-truck were not injured.
