WMU trustees back plan for med school
Anonymous donor has pledged $1.8 million

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (AP) - Western Michigan University's board of trustees has decided to go ahead with plans for a new medical school, a move under consideration for two years.
Western Michigan officials said Tuesday an anonymous donor has pledged $1.8 million to hire an interim dean and pay for detailed planning. They say the school would not use public funds.
Central Michigan and Oakland universities also are seeking accreditation for medical schools.
The University of Michigan, Wayne State and Michigan State universities already have medical schools in the state.
Michigan's medical schools admitted 616 new students in 2008, out of 18,036 accepted nationwide.
