KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WOOD) - Thousands of people lined a 13-mile route to pay their respects to Eric Zapata, the Kalamazoo Public Safety officer gunned down in the line of duty on April 18.
The funeral procession followed a lengthy service at Miller Auditorium in front of nearly 4,000 attendees.
The slow processional included nearly 1,500 cars and emergency units from different agencies around the state and country, and took an estimated 30 minutes to travel less than five miles.
Along the route, people from all walks of life came out, many who know someone in law enforcement, the military or another dangerous profession.
Over the past 10 years, 36 officers have been killed in the line of duty in Michigan. Services such as the funeral of Eric Zapata remind others of the risks some take to make life better for all.
