KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WOOD) -- No one was hurt when a house caught fire Friday afternoon, but it took firefighters two hours to douse the blaze, leaving seven feet of water in the basement.
The home at 1316 Race Street the building was fully engulfed in flames around 4 p.m. Friday. The owners of the home were away when the fire started. They arrived home to find smoke coming out of their house and called the fire department.
Investigators know the fire started in the basement but won't be able to check deeper until the water in the water is removed.
Officials said the older house had no fire stops built into the wall or between floors and there was no way to stop the fire from spreading. They also don't believe there were any working smoke detectors.
No one was injured in the fire and the American Red Cross helped the family with emergency housing.
