PORTAGE, Mich. (WOOD) - A man suspected of stealing items used to make methamphetamine from a Meijer store threatened to kill a customer at a nearby Subway restaurant while attempting to fend off police. The standoff ended when officers Tasered the 31-year-old suspect.
At 8 p.m. Monday, the Portage Police Department responded to the robbery at 5121 S. Westnedge Avenue. When officers arrived, employees told them the suspect fled on a bicycle toward Kilgore Road.
Officers spotted the suspect near the Subway restaurant, 4434 S. Westnedge Avenue. Officers approached the man, and he ran into the business and grabbed a customer by the neck. The suspect and customer then fell to the ground. Police say he threatened to kill the 64-year-old customer.
Officers used a Taser to subdue the suspect and take him into custody. Police found a knife on the floor under him.
The customer suffered a cut to the head.
The suspect faces charges including felonious assault, kidnapping, resisting and obstructing officers, possession of methamphetamine components and retail fraud. He has outstanding warrants from the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety including armed robbery and felony firearm.
