Cops: Drunk driver hit pedestrian

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WOOD) - A 61-year-old woman is in critical condition at a hospital after police say she was hit by a drunk driver while walking across a street in Kalamazoo Monday night.

Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety officials said in a news release Eljean Lee Belmonte was walking across Gull Road near Humphrey Street around 10 p.m. when she was hit. Her head hit the vehicle's windshield.

When officers arrived at the scene, Belmonte of Kalamazoo was breathing but not responsive.

The man behind the wheel, a 56-year-old Galesburg man, stopped at the scene and waited for police to arrive. He was arrested for operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated causing a serious injury.
