BATTLE CREEK, Mich. (WOOD) - Two people were identified after allegedly spilling diesel fuel into Battle Creek storm sewers that connected to the Kalamazoo River.

Officials with the Department of Environmental Quality told 24 Hour News 8 the unnamed men took a fuel oil tank - used for a furnace -- outside and that it leaked.

Originally, it was believed about 200 gallons of diesel fuel leaked, but officials now believe it was no more than 60 gallons. They do not expect any long lasting effects from the leak.

The city was notified of the leak by a resident on Monday. The storm drain goes into another drain that flows into a creek that eventually flows into the river.

It will be up to the Calhoun County prosecutor to determine if any charges will be filed. The city of Battle Creek may also decide to seek restitution from the men.
