BATTLE CREEK, Mich. (WOOD) - A 1-year-old died Thursday morning when his father backed out of the driveway and accidentally hit his son.
The incident happened around 9 a.m. on Thornapple Drive near Peachtree.
Somehow, the child got behind the vehicle. Despite rescue efforts, the child was pronounced dead at a Battle Creek hospital.
No charges will be brought against the father, according to Battle Creek Police. This is just a tragic accident that could have happened to anyone.
"Whether you're going to the store or work, they don't want mom or dad to leave, so they chase after you," said Lt. Todd Madsen, of the Battle Creek Police Department. "Sometimes, the kid gets into a mode where it's a game. And we're going to hide. Cause we play games inside the house and they don't know the dangers."
Any accident involving a child is difficult not only for the parents, but for emergency responders, as well, Madsen said.
