BATTLE CREEK, Mich. (WOOD) - The Battle Creek Police Department told 24 Hour News 8 an 8-year-old girl rescued from an arson Thursday morning died of her injuries Friday.

Deputy police chief James Saylor said the department is now treating the case as a homicide.

Investigators Friday officially ruled the case an arson, which was the preliminary indication Thursday.

Two siblings jumped from a second-story window and their sister, Karrina Johnson, was rescued by a firefighter from a blaze inside the Battle Creek residence Thursday morning.

The girl was in the burn unit at Bronson Methodist Hospital in Kalamazoo, but was taken off life support, Saylor said.

Police have two "persons of interest" in the case; one of them is in custody on an unrelated charge.

The fire began around 2 a.m. Thursday on an enclosed porch at the home on Young Street between Van Buren Street and Michigan Avenue.

You are asked to call the Battle Creek Police Department or Silent Observer at 269.964.3888 if you have more information about this incident.
