COMSTOCK TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) - A pedestrian was killed while walking along a Comstock Township road.
Kyler Michelle Lanning and Darel Earl Stewart -- both of Kalamazoo -- were walking north along South 29th Street near East MN Avenue around 7:30 a.m. Thursday. They were struck by a northbound vehicle.
The car stopped, Stewart told 24 Hour News 8. The driver came back and said, "Oh my God, I'm so sorry."
He replied, "Sorry?"
Lanning, 24, did not survive. Stewart, 22, sustained a broken foot.
Stewart, Lanning's boyfriend, told 24 Hour News 8 that it was like being hit by a train.
"The car hit me first, man, it should've been me," Stewart said. "My heart... My heart was torn."
Stewart said he and Lanning had only been dating for two months.
"Her brother told me awhile back, 'She got (sic) a smile on her face.' He was like, 'I've never seen that,'" he said.
24 Hour News 8 found that driver 24-year-old Amanda Ambs of Scotts has previous citations. One was for disobeying a stop sign. Another was for "driving without due care or caution" in a two-car non-injury crash in 2007.
Ambs told police she doesn't know how the crash happened.
Alcohol is not considered a factor. The crash remains under investigation.
