Texts narrate teacher-student affair

Krag Sanford pleaded to 3 counts in 2 counties

SARANAC, Mich. (WOOD) - A police report is providing new insight into the affair conducted between an ex-teacher and a now-17-year-old student.

Former Saranac High School teacher Krag Sanford took a plea agreement Tuesday in Ionia County. He pleaded no contest to felony two counts of providing a minor with sexually explicit materials. Monday in Kent County, he pleaded no contest to one count of accosting a minor for immoral purposes as part of a deal.

The police report summary obtained via the Freedom of Information Act shows text messages between Sanford and the then-16-year-old girl involved in the affair -- some quite graphic.

The text message conversations listed in the report started in June 2010, while the student was 15.

In the first conversation listed on the report, Sanford wrote on June 4, 2010: "that is okay, my love, see you when you get here, I adore you."

Some texts even alluded to Sanford and the student meeting up for early-morning trysts at the high school.

On Sept. 9, 2010, the student texted at 2:54 a.m., "do you think I could have you this morning"?

Sanford responded: "waiting in lab 2"

Hours later, Sanford wrote "You were amazing", and "I need every morning to be similar to this one. I love you so much".

In August 2010, three months before Sanford resigned, the 16-year-old texted, "how can you make love to me then go do something with your wife"?

Sanford was still married at that time to another teacher at Saranac High School.

Sanford texted back, "I shut off my feelings when I get home."

On Oct. 18, 2010, another text conversation references some sort of investigation that worries Sanford:

16-year-old: "are you okay"
Sanford: "yeah, just freaking out. Did I ever send you pictures ... ?"
16-year-old: I don't think so, they can't look at your records without a warrant and to get one they need proof something is happening."

As part of the plea agreements, Sanford will forfeit his Michigan teaching certificate and have to register as a sex offender.

Both the Ionia and Kent county prosecutors agreed not to pursue criminal sexual conduct charges.

The Ionia County prosecutor told 24 Hour News 8 that criminal sexual conduct charges were never brought because he had no physical evidence to prove the relationship was sexual in Ionia County. He said texts don't prove beyond a reasonable doubt.

Sanford and the teen filed for a marriage license in March. The teen is now about nine weeks pregnant with Sanford's child.
