IONIA, Mich. (WOOD) - A letter presented in an Ionia County court said that the student who allegedly had an affair with former Saranac High School teacher Krag Sanford is pregnant with his child, according to an Ionia newspaper.
Sanford, 59, faces charges in both Kent and Ionia counties in connection to allegations that he had a sexual relationship with a then-16-year-old female student. The two filed for a marriage license in March.
The Ionia Sentinel-Standard reported the letter was presented during a Monday pre-trial appointment for the two counts of felony distributing sexually explicit materials to a minor Sanford faces in Ionia County.
The letter requested that Sanford be allowed to contact the now-17-year-old because she is "roughly eight weeks pregnant" with his child, according to the Sentinel-Standard. The letter said that the pregnancy is high-risk and the mother is in need of emotional support.
It also requested that the 17-year-old's doctor get Sanford's medical history in order to help prevent a premature birth.
Ionia County Prosecuting Attorney Ron Schafer told the judge that he thought granting the request would not be a good idea considering the nature of the charges that Sanford faces, according to the Sentinel-Standard.
District Court Chief Judge Raymond Voet agreed with the prosecutor and denied the request.
