Greenville man shoots at cops; dies

BELDING, Mich. (WOOD) - A Greenville man fired shots outside the Belding City Hall and Police Department before leading police on a chase where he was gunned down in a shootout.

Authorities spent most of Saturday working to determine who the suspect was. " No identification was found at the scene, so we're unsure who it is," said Lt. Kevin Sweeney of Michigan State Police.

A family member tells 24 Hour News 8 that the man who shot at authorities was Bud Rowley Jr.  Rowley was a 55-year-old from the Greenville area.

At a Saturday morning press conference, officials with both the Belding Police Department and the Michigan State Police provided more details about how the incident unfolded.

Around 5:12 a.m., police heard popping noises outside the city hall and police department. Rowley was outside the building and shot out a window in a parked police cruiser.

Rowley fled in a white Dodge van and was pursued for about a mile to the area of Hawley Highway and M-44. Rowley got out of the van and fired at a pursuing officer, hitting that cruiser.

A Belding police officer returned fire, striking and killing Rowley.

It's unclear at this time how many total shots were fired.

At the time of the shooting, the Michigan State Police were at the scene. This is the first-ever officer-involved shooting in Belding.
