TROWBRIDGE TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) - A 32-year-old Allegan man who abused and then abandoned a puppy along the side of a road was sentenced Friday and will spend at least one month in prison.
Kristopher Paul Hall already has credit for 28 days served. He also will be on probation for two years and have to perform 100 hours of community service at an animal shelter. In addition, Hall was ordered to undergo substance abuse and mental health counseling.
Hall previously was arraigned and then bound over on charges of killing or torturing an animal (a felony), and abandoning/cruelty to an animal (a misdemeanor).
A witness called police April 29 after seeing a man had dumped some items in a ditch near 34th Street and 107th Avenue in Trowbridge Township.
Allegan County sheriff's deputies responded to the area and found the young, yellow labrador retriever in a swamp. The animal had extensive injuries, including trauma to its right eye and its lower jaw area, which appeared to be broken.
That man turned out to be Hall. He was arrested later in a vehicle, which a witness had described to police.
The puppy was taken to Allegan Veterinary Clinic where it was treated for injuries and later adopted by one of the doctors.
