Students at two Middleville schools were evacuated Wednesday morning after a nearby gas line was hit.

Officials with the superintendent's office say village utility workers were doing excavation work across the street from Thornapple Kellogg High School when the line was hit at around 9:30 a.m.

High school students were evacuated to Thornapple Kellogg Middle School, and students at Page Elementary School, which is also in the area, were moved to Lee Elementary School.

Page students are doubling up in Lee classrooms, and high school students are in the middle school gym and cafeteria. All of the evacuated students will return to their schools after lunch.

A Consumers Energy crew capped the leak about an hour later.
